CHARACTER INFORMATION

Character Name: Delphine Angua von Uberwald
Canon Name: Discworld

Background: Series wiki and character article.

Angua was the descendent of a long and infamous family of werewolves (lycanthropy being an inherited trait on Discworld, not one that is spread by biting, though there seems to be some myths that it can be spread that way.). Angua disliked the savage violence that the rest of her family took for granted, and so in an act of rebellion she became a vegetarian, moved to the distant city of Ankh-Morpork, and joined the City Watch.

While she was initially viewed with some suspicion by her mostly male colleagues, Angua eventually earned the respect of the Watch through a combination of hard work, determination, intelligence, and most importantly her incredible sense of smell and ability to crack a man's skull in her jaws. She is now one of Commander Vimes most trusted...er...men, a feared face in the criminal underworld, in a happy, if strange, relationship with one of her fellow officers, and has achieved the rank of Captain.

Canon Personality: Werewolves are humans who have a bit of wolf in them. In a similar vein, dogs are wolves who have a bit of human in them. There is a certain amount of similarity between the two. Most werewolves let the wolf do as it pleases, and are the terror of the night, but those that try to hold the wolf back, like Angua, find themselves naturally taking an obedient role. There's a part of them that is happiest when someone says "Good girl!" (Metaphorically, of course. If you literally said "Good Girl!" to Angua she'd likely do something pointlessly hideous to you.). She likes being praised for doing a good job, but at the same time she knows this little personality quirk about werewolves, and so she's rather embarrassed by it.

Angua hates wild werewolves. It is the special kind of hate that is saved for that which you hate about yourself. Angua knows that if she's not careful she could end up just like them, and so she distances herself from them as much as possible.

Being able to physically take on just about any human instills a certain confidence and lack of fear of physical danger in oneself. In times of crisis, Angua is not one to freeze up. She's more likely to leap into action, possibly without thinking things through all the way. That's the wolf in her. She keeps it MOSTLY under control.

Knowing that she only keeps it MOSTLY under control, Angua lives her life accordingly. She can't stand the smell of blood because it makes her want to tear people's throats out, so she avoids it whenever she can and doesn't eat meat. Sometimes during the full moon she gives in and hunts down some chickens, but she very conscientiously pays the owners afterwards by slipping some money under their door. When pressed on why she does it, her answer is "Because animals don't pay."

She hates being around vampires. Discworld vampires have incredible poise and grace, and that combined with the smell makes werewolves feel like dumb shaggy animals. Even more, though, people just want to LIKE vampires. They think they're COOL. Whereas werewolves are just viewed as dangerous beasts that you need to keep an eye on. While around a vampire, Angua has to override the wolf inside her second by second to not go for its throat. It leaves her short tempered and irritable.

In conversation, she has a very dry sense of humor and is relentlessly practical. She feigns incomprehension when people try to be sexist at her and keeps pushing it until they break down and explain exactly what they're trying to say, which usually makes them sound very foolish. She isn't very good at dealing with emotions in general, feeling that getting too closely involved with anyone is doomed to heartbreak (Which makes her relationship with Carrot rather complicated.). As such she tends to keep her feelings to herself, telling herself that a non-werewolf wouldn't understand.

Canon Abilities:
Strengths
- As a werewolf, Angua can switch freely between a fully human shaped form and a fully wolf shaped form. Direct exposure to the light of a full moon forces her to immediately take the wolf form. If she were repeatedly badly injured enough times in a short period and really forced to rely on her regenration, the forms might start blending together, but in a sort of patchwork way rather than a "wolfmonster" way.
- Angua's sense of smell is superhuman. She can track people by scent, can smell what mood you are in, what you had for breakfast, even what color clothes you are wearing. It gets even stronger in wolf form.
- It is difficult (but not impossible) to kill a werewolf without silver weapons. In canon, Angua recovers from five gunshot wounds to the chest in a matter of hours.
- While in wolf form, Angua is still in control of her own actions and can think like a human, although doing so is harder, and it continues to get harder the longer she stays a wolf.
- In human form, Angua is stronger and faster than the average human, though not by a huge amount.
- Angua can speak to and understand the language of dogs and wolves.
- Most animals are instinctively afraid of werewolves.
Weaknesses
- Silver weapons can kill her quite easily. Just touching the metal won't kill her, but it is very painful and will leave her too weakened and confused to really do much of anything.
- Fire will also do the trick. Burning a werewolf will work just as well as burning a regular human.
- Rapidly switching between forms a lot can confuse the body, leading to behavior like the wolf trying to talk or walk on two legs, or the human trying to run on all four or pounce on people.
- When she transforms, her clothes don't come with her. She has to carry something with her, or be naked when she turns human again.
- The longer she stays in a wolf form, the harder it is for her to think like a human, and vice versa.
- Trasnforming isn't PAINFUL, but it is described as extremely disturbing and unsettling to watch.
- Wolves have a natural dislike of werewolves, and will frequently attack them on sight.

AU INFORMATION:

Race: Hume
Job: Knight, no subclass
Nation Affiliation: Crimson Rose (Formerly of Dalvarus)

AU Background: Uberwald is, in this world, a small but rich province in Dalvarus, high in the mountains. The land is harsh and cold, but the mineral wealth is very high, making it an importal supplier of metals to Dalvarus' massive industries. The Uberwald family has been ruling the land for so long that their name is the same as their home, and they are all of them a pack of bastards. Canny politicans and powerful warriors, but also remorseless, cunning, backstabbing, and brutal. They wear their reputation with pride, banking on the fear it instills in others, and generally just make everyone uncomfortable. Their loyalty to the Emperor (and now to the Empress) has always been conditional, in the "we follow you with loyalty and passion as long as we're sure you are stronger than us!"

Angua didn't fit in. She was plenty competent at keeping up with intrafamily politics and not getting murdered in the night by an ambitious cousin, but she had a fatal weakness that made it impossible for her to fit in: a conscience.

So when the skullduggery grew too much to put up with, she left. She was just eighteen, but she was also smart, driven, and tough as hell. She left in the middle of the night and made her way almost all the way across the empire to the Licaen border. She didn't actually flee to Licae; she still had a bit of patriotism floating around inside her. Instead, she joined the Crimson Rose out of spite, because it felt like the LAST place anyone from her family would want to work. This happened about a year ago, and she's made some headway towards building a new life completely cut off from her family.

Unfortunately, they recently figured out where she had gone, and after their initial surprise they have started to lean on her. They want her to either come back home, or to stay in the Crimson Rose and feed them information, and don't really believe her when she says she's done with them.

AU Deviation: Werewolves are powerful, but also generally not thought very highly of on Discworld. They're either fearsome nighttime predators to be avoided, or a target for an angry mob. As such, all werewolve end up either as incredibly aggressive or incredibly jumpy. Canon Angua tends to fall more in the latter category. THIS Angua, however, grew up entirely human hume. As such, a lot of the internal skittishness and second guessing herself is gone. There might even be a hint of the unthinking arrogance you get from growing up as an aristocrat from a family feared by commoners in the area, though she is aware of this quirk in her and tries to keep it in check.

Angua also is going to have a very different attitude towards magic. Magic is Discworld's version of nuclear power, in that it can be used for good or for evil, but is incredibly dangerous and makes people nervous. Magic in final fantasy, on the other hand, is just another tool to be used by anyone who has access to it, and is as wonderous as a screwdriver or lawn mower.

RP Sample: You find yourself adrift in a sea of gentle green and white light. A warm, comforting and parental voice speaks to you. It has no distinct gender, being both male, female, and neither all at once, but it is warm and kind, overflowing with tenderness for you.

"Great one of old," it says, "it is time to once again awaken. The world is in peril, but the will of mortals is to live on even in the face of adversity. See. Remember. Awaken."

Images flood your mind as knowledge flows into you. It, like the sensation around you, is warm and comfortable. It's like coming home.

As the flood subsides, the voice speaks again.

"You remember now, at least a little. But memories are not all that define mortal life. Tell me, child, who are you?"

And with that query, a flood of questions enters your mind. You may answer or ignore them, as you will. Upon answering, you will awaken.

-What is your deepest heart's desire, and why?
Gods I don't know. Just to put my past behind me so it stops jumping me in dark alleys at night. Metaphorically. I want a fresh start.
-What is it you fear the most, and why?
That I might be just like them after all.
-What can you never forgive, and why?
Giving in to your crueler impulses without a fight. Being born a cruel monster and being content to stay like that.
-What qualities do you seek in comrades, and why?
Thinking of the lower classes as actual people and not just livestock that happens to walk on two legs is a good start. The mark of a real friend is someone who will point it out when I'm being a bastard.
-What kind of people you seek to surround yourself with, and why?
Good people, who do the just and kind thing without thinking. Maybe if I do it enough I can become like them. But probably not.
-It is the night before a great battle, where are you and what are you doing?
Pretending to sleep. Actually quietly freaking out.
-It is the night before a life-changing exam, where are you and what are you doing?
Seeking a distraction. Anything will do. Just don't think about it.
-In your time of leisure, how do you choose to occupy yourself and why?
Get a group. Then...honestly just go with whatever the group decides. I don't want a lot of attention on myself right now.
-Why is it you serve your liege?
Lie: It's better than sleeping in the streets.
Honest: The Crimson Rose's dedication to peace and reconciliation creates a good atmosphere for keeping my darker impulses in check, and also it annoys my mom.
-What is necessary to earn your loyalty?
Just...be a good person. Or even better, make me believe I can be a good person!

IC Information:
Name: Delphine Angua Von Überwald/Angela Roth
Canon and medium: Discworld Novels
Age: 29
Preincarnation Species: Werewolf
Preincarnation Appearance: A blond, busty supermodel in chainmail and leather. ACTUAL chainmail and leather, not some skimpy bikini nonsense. This fanart has always been my favorite depiction of her.
Any differences: Angela wears normal clothes, of course, cuts her hair shorter, and is less likely to sprout fangs and claws when she's angry.
Preincarnated History: Series wiki and character article.

She is now one of Commander Vimes most trusted...er...men, a feared face in the criminal underworld, in a happy, if strange, relationship with one of her fellow officers, and has achieved the rank of Captain.

Reincarnated History: Angela's family is old money. They moved to America from Germany shortly before World War Two, as her great grandparents had lived through World War One, and when they started noticing the rumblings of war coming around again, they had the wherewithal to take all their family and get the fuck out of there. They figured Chicago sounded about far enough to be safe. Their challenges to find acceptance in America as German Immigrants during the height of the war would no doubt make for an interesting story, but it is not what we are here for.

Skip ahead to the modern day. Angela Roth has two brothers (one older, one younger), and a younger sister. Her parents wanted their children to become the movers and shakers in society, and sent them to a prestigious private school that was famous for sending their students on to become politicians. Of the four Roth Children, only her older brother, Walther, actually took to politics. He dove straight in to a political science and business major in college, and continued on that path right up to the present day, where he is running for mayor in one of the suburbs of Chicago.

Angela hated politics. The compromises, the lies, and general aura of what she thought of as a kind of low grade evil that surrounded the entire field grated on her soul. Seeking a more black and white kind of life, Angela turned her back on that life and instead of going to college she enrolled in the police academy. She ended up getting a position in the LCPD, where she has lived quite happily away from her family's cutthroat politics for six years now.

She currently has the rank of Detective with the vice squad, is a big football fan, likes detective stories (because they're so much more satisfying than work.), and is starting to feel like she's been single for far too long.

First Echo: A relatively simple thing. She was out on the night of a full moon. She'd seen many full moons in her life, but this one had just the right combination of weather, scents, and scenery that it triggered an echo. She recalled some of the time she spent living with a pack of wolves during The Fifth Elephant. So mainly fleeting glimpses of running through snowy woods with a pack of wolves as a wolf herself.

Preincarnation Personality: Werewolves are humans who have a bit of wolf in them.

When pressed on why she doesn't, her answer is "Because animals don't pay."

She gets irritated by references to her gender. She isn't very good at dealing with emotions in general, feeling that getting too closely involved with anyone is doomed to heartbreak (Which makes her relationship with Carrot rather complicated.). As such she tends to keep her feelings to herself, telling herself that a non-werewolf wouldn't understand.

Any differences: The biggest difference between Angela and Angua is that Angela did not grow up learning how to be a werewolf. Angua lives in constant fear of losing control and killing someone, and so there is an underlying skittishness and standoffish attitude to everything she does. Angela, on the other hand, cannot accidentally rip out someone's throat, and so she is more confident in dealing with social situations of all kinds. She has no hang ups about flirting, making friends, or starting relationships.

While she still Share's Angua's distaste for her family, it is FAR less focused. Angua feared and hated everything her family represented, and was prepared to kill her own brother. Angela doesn't particularly get along with her family, but she doesn't HATE them. Her parents think she is wasting her potential as a police officer, but accept her choice with no more than a bit of subtle criticism. She dislikes her brother, but would never even consider actually killing him.

Angela lacks Angua's obsession with being civilized. Angua conscientiously paid for everything she took and didn't eat meat while human, because doing otherwise made her feel like a wild animal. Angela, on the other hand, doesn't react to the smell of blood with a desire to maul people, and so she enjoys a good steak as much as the next guy. She still is very scrupulous about the law, but in this case she acts this way because she is a cop, rather than becoming a cop because she acts this way. The motivations are entirely different.

Finally, Angela would be rather uncomfortable living in the wilderness. She grew up surrounded by the luxuries of the city, and wouldn't have the first clue what to do if she got lost in the woods. Her idea of "roughing it" is going to a public campsite with a van packed full of supplies and staying the night with some friends, beers, and marshmallows.

Roleplay Sample - Third Person: Angela plastered on a blank look as the captain droned on about the new accounting system and tried her best not to stare at his jungular veins. She should have been home an hour ago, but this stupid meeting was going on longer than was safe, and now the sun had gone down and the moon was out. My god the moon. She could FEEL her hair trying to grow, to say nothing of her nails trying to turn into claws. She was pretty confident that she could hold out from the meeting, but getting home would be...interesting.

She didn't know the officer sitting behind her very well. Rodriguez, maybe? She had been ignoring him, but when he leaned forwards to whisper "How long is this idiot going to keep droning?" She snapped her head around and actually growled at him. The entire room stopped to stare at her. She cleared her throat nervously. "Er...sorry. Just a frog in my throat."

Angela sunk down in her seat, red with embarrassment as the captain tried to pick up the thread of his lecture again. Oh yes, interesting indeed. And all the covered parking spaces had been taken that morning, so she wouldn't be able to get to her car without exposure. Damn damn damn!

Roleplay Sample - Network: Those of you who helped me out at the park yesterday...thank you. Those of you who laughed can go fuck yourselves with a cactus. Believe me I won't be forgetting any of you in the future if you need a hand.

Or, you know...A paw.

[cough.]

Anyways if it's all the same to you I think I'll just stay indoors until the full moon is past. I'm sure all you brave heroes can get on without me for a few days.

Any Questions? What is Locke City's football team? Are they any good? What are the team's colors? Also is there anything special I need to know now that I have a character with the police, or would they have just noticed that some of their colleagues had been getting Weird Orders?
